Sleeping Bear Dunes Cruises

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Each year, thousands of visitors enjoy the opportunity of experiencing one our nation's national treasures. Some will play at the Dune Climb while others will take in the scenery. Because it is a National Lakeshore, you will not find the Sleeping Bear Dune's shoreline full of high-rise buildings and condominiums. Instead you will see what nature has created from glaciers, wind and water. The sand and gravel bluffs can reach up to 450 feet above the lake level.
The Legend
Long ago, in the land that is now Wisconsin, a mother bear and her two cubs were driven into Lake Michigan by a raging forest fire. They swam and swam, but soon the cubs tired and lagged far behind. Mother bear finally reached the opposite shore and climbed to the top of a bluff to watch and wait for her offspring. But the cubs drowned. A solitary dune today, Sleeping Bear, marks the spot where mother bear waited. Her hapless cubs are the Manitou Islands.
